Emissions

Massachusetts performs an OBD emissions test annually on vehicles that are less than 15 years old.

Diesel Vehicles:
Diesel vehicles are required to undergo emissions testing based on their weight and model year. Vehicles that require testing: Model years 2005 and newer light-duty diesel vehicles (with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or "GVWR" of 8,500 pounds or less), Model years 2007 and newer medium-duty diesel vehicles (with a GVWR of 8,501 to 14,000 pounds). Model year 1984 and newer, medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles (with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more) not subject to an OBD test.

Exemptions:
1. New vehicles delivered to Massachusetts owners
2. Vehicles 15 years old and older 
3. Electric Vehicles

Chapter 90 § 7.  Brakes, Lights and Other Equipment; Standards.

Every motor vehicle so operated shall be provided with a muffler or other suitable device to prevent unnecessary noise and with a suitable bell, horn or other means of signaling, with suitable lamps, and with a lock, key or other device to prevent such vehicle from being set in motion by unauthorized persons, or otherwise contrary to the will of the owner or person in charge thereof.
  
Chapter 90 § 16. Offensive or illegal operation of motor vehicles

No person shall use a muffler cut-out or by-pass. No person shall operate a motor vehicle on any way which motor vehicle is equipped (1) with a muffler from which the baffle plates, screens or other original internal parts have been removed and not replaced; or (2) with an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust.

License Plate

Antique

Available for vehicles more than 25 years old that are maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1949 that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.
