California Legislation to Eliminate Emissions Testing Exemption for Older Vehicles Defeated... For Now

At SEMA's request, California Senate Bill 800 was amended to remove language that would have repealed the rolling emissions exemption for cars 30-years old and older. The bill was further amended to provide for an emissions test exemption for ";collector vehicles,"; defined as cars 25-years old or older that meet certain criteria (not primary source of transportation).

These are both significant victories. In addition, California Senate Bill 1172 was also amended to remove the repeal of the rolling exemption. However, we expect supporters of the repeal to identify another bill to which they can attach the repeal. We will be on our guard and let you know of any developments.

Thanks for your letters, faxes and e-mails. They made all the difference.
