Specialty Plates by State


The requirements for each specialty plate type are listed below, but requirements are subject to change.  Please check with your local DMV for current guidance and paperwork.  Vehicles that may qualify for specialty plates include antique, collector, custom, historic, horseless carriage, special interest, street rod, and vintage vehicles.  Some states also allow vehicle owners to display plates that were issued in the state in the year the vehicle was manufactured, known as "year of manufacture" or "YOM" plates.

Alabama

Vintage Vehicle

Available for a private passenger automobile, truck or truck tractor which weighs not more than 26,000 pounds gross weight, motorcycle, or fire truck that is over 30 years old, operated as a collector’s item, not used for general transportation purposes and having the original or substantially similar vehicle body, chassis, engine, and transmission as designated for that make, model, year, and age vehicle. Registration Fee: $10

YOM

Available upon application for any vehicle designated as a 1976 year model vehicle or earlier that is qualified to receive a vintage vehicle license plate.

Alaska

Custom Collector Vehicle

A custom collector vehicle has a body and frame manufactured before 1949 or is a replica of such a model. The initial plate fee for custom collector plates is $50.00, along with all applicable fees for the class and body style of vehicle.

Historic Vehicle

A historic vehicle is 30 or more years old and is primarily driven for the purpose of historical exhibition. You may obtain a special plate indicating this status. Because historic vehicles are used only occasionally on the State highway system, annual registration renewal of a historic vehicle registration is not necessary. The initial registration fee for historic vehicles is $10.00.

YOM

No law on YOM plates. Not allowed.

Arizona

Classic Car

Available for vehicles included on the list of classic cars filed with the Motor Vehicle Division by the Classic Car Club of America. The list is updated every five years. May require a vehicle inspection.

Historic Vehicle

Available for vehicles that indicate a model date of original manufacture that is at least 25 years old. May require a vehicle inspection. 

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1915 or earlier. May require a vehicle inspection. 

Street Rod

Available for vehicles with a body design that retains at least the basic original style of a vehicle manufactured in 1948 or earlier, and which have been modified for safe road use. May require a vehicle inspection.
 

YOM

Vehicles that are eligible for either Classic Car or Historic Vehicle plates may display YOM plates upon authorization from the DMV.

Arkansas

Antique

Available for historical or special interest vehicles or any vehicle that is forty five (45) years old or older, which is essentially unaltered from the original manufacturers specifications.

Custom Vehicle or Street Rod

Available for Custom Vehicles and Street Rods.

•    Custom Vehicle -  A motor vehicle that is at least twenty-five (25) years old and of a model year after 1948, or was manufactured to resemble such vehicle; has been altered from the manufacturer's original design, or has a body construction from non-original materials.

•    Street Rod -  A motor vehicle that is a 1948 or older vehicle or was manufactured to resemble a vehicle manufactured before 1949, and has been altered from the manufacturer's original design, or has a body constructed from non-original materials.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

California

Historic Vehicle

Available for vehicles manufactured after 1922 which are at least 25 years old and of historic interest.

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles with an engine of 16 or more cylinders that were manufactured prior to 1965 and for vehicles manufactured in 1922 or earlier, regardless of cylinders.

Legacy

Replicas of California license plates similar to those issued in the 1960s. Legacy license plates can be ordered for any year model automobile, commercial vehicle, motorcycle, or trailer.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured in 1980 or earlier may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Colorado

5 Year Collector

Available for passenger cars and trucks that do not exceed sixteen thousand pounds empty weight, and  must be (a) Model year 1975 or earlier; or (b) Model year 1976 or later that was registered as a collector's item prior to September 1, 2009; except that a vehicle so registered is not eligible for registration as a collector's item upon sale or transfer to a new owner; OR (c) A model year at least thirty-two years old unless the vehicle was registered before September 1,2009, and meets the requirements of paragraph (b) of this subsection. If the vehicle is being registered under this paragraph (c) and in the program area, as defined in section 42-4-304: (i) The vehicle must have passed an emissions test meeting the standards of part 3 of article 4 of this title within the last twelve months before being initially registered by the owner as a collector's item; and (ii) The owner must sign an affidavit DR 2839 that the vehicle will not be driven on roadways for more than four thousand five hundred miles per year. All taxes and fees shall be five times the annual taxes and fees normally assessed.

Horseless Carriage

Available for passenger cars and light trucks that do not exceed sixteen thousand pounds empty weight that are at least 50 years old that are highly valued principally because of their early date of manufacture, design, historical interest, or value as collector's items. Vehicles are limited to driving to and from assemblies, conventions for demonstrations and parades, occasional leisure drives, and on other occasions when their operations will not constitute a traffic hazard. Plates are registered for a set 5-year cycle with all plates expiring on the same date within that set 5-year cycle regardless of the date of issue.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1948 or earlier with body designs that have been modified for safe road use.
 

YOM

Vehicles that are least 30 years old may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Connecticut

Classic Vehicle

Available for vehicles that are at least 20 years old and currently registered in Connecticut.  The Classic Vehicle plates replace the Early American (Antique) license plates. Fee for replacing "Early American" style plate with "Classic Vehicle" plate: $27. Fee to get classic vehicle plate for the first time: $47 fee plus 2-year registration fee (Varies depending on amount of time left on current registration.  You will be credited with the amount of time left on current registration.)

YOM

Available for antique, rare, or special interest vehicles that are currently registered with “Early American” or “Classic Vehicle” plates with DMV approval. "Early American" or "Classic" plates, registration documents, and the Application to Display Year of Original Manufacture Plates (form B-320) must be carried within the vehicle at all times. No fee.

Delaware

Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old that have been maintained in or restored to a condition that substantially conforms to manufacturer's specifications, and which may be used only for participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar uses and not for general transportation. $25 fee for Antique Status.

YOM

Allows for the purchase of replica YOM license plates through the Delaware Historic Plate Company. Hobbyists should review the guidelines on the Delaware Historic Plate Company website before purchasing a replica plate.

Florida

Antique

Available for vehicles manufactured after 1945 that are at least 30 years old and equipped with an engine that is at least 30 years old.

Custom

Available for modified motor vehicles manufactured after 1948 that are at least 25 years old that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials. The vehicle must meet state equipment and safety requirements that were in effect in this state as a condition of sale in the year listed as the model year on the certificate of title. Custom vehicles may only be used for exhibition and not for general transportation.

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles weighing 5,000 pounds or less that were manufactured in 1945 or earlier.

Street Rod

Available for modified vehicles manufactured before 1949. The vehicle must meet state equipment and safety requirements that were in effect in this state as a condition of sale in the year listed as the model year on the certificate of title. Street rods may only be used for exhibition and not for general transportation.

FORMER MILITARY VEHICLE

Available for a vehicle, including a trailer, regardless of the vehicle’s size, weight, or year of manufacture, that was manufactured for use in any country’s military forces and is maintained to represent its military design and markings accurately. A former military vehicle that is used only in exhibitions, parades, or public display is exempt from the requirement to display a license plate or registration insignia if the exemption is necessary to maintain the vehicle’s accurate military markings. However, the license plate and registration certificate issued under this section must be carried within the vehicle and available for inspection by any law enforcement officer.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" or "Horseless Carriage" that were manufactured in 1974 or earlier may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Georgia

Hobby Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than twenty-five (25) years old or to vehicles that have been designed and manufactured to resemble an antique or historical vehicle. Initial cost: $80 plus applicable ad valorem tax. Cost to renew annually: $55.00 plus applicable ad valorem tax.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured in 1989 or earlier may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Current state-issued plates must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

Hawaii

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 35 years old, of the original factory specifications, or restored to the original specifications, in unaltered or unreconstructed condition, and operated or moved over the highway primarily for the purpose of historical exhibition or other similar purposes. 

YOM

No law on YOM plates. Not allowed.

Idaho

Classic

Available for vehicles that are at least 30 years old, do not qualify for "Idaho Old Timer" plates, in original or authentically-restored condition without major modifications from factory specifications, and that will not be used for commercial or regular personal transportation. Only a single rear plate required.

Old Timer

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1943 that are authentic restorations without major modifications from factory specifications and that will not be used for commercial or regular personal transportation. Only a single rear plate required.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1949, or designed to resemble such vehicles, that have significant drive train updates, such as changes to engine, transmission, rear axle, or suspension components. The body should resemble the manufacturer's original issue. Only a single rear plate required.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured in 1974 or earlier that weigh 26,000 pounds or less may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Use of 1969-73 year plates is prohibited because they did not have the year embossed on them.  "Classic" or "Old Timer" plates may be used in conjunction with the YOM plate at the option of the owner. Only a single rear plate required.

Illinois

Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old and bona fide replicas. Antique plates may only be used to drive to and from antique auto shows, exhibitions, service stations and demonstrations.

Antique Expanded-Use

Annually-issued plates that allow a vehicle 25 years old or older, or a bona fide replica to be driven with no restrictions from April to October. From January-March and November-December, vehicles may only be driven to and from antique auto shows, exhibitions, service stations and demonstrations. 

Former Military Vehicle

Available for a vehicle, regardless of size, weight, or year of manufacture, that was manufactured for use in any country's military forces and is maintained to depict or represent military design or markings. A former military vehicle does not include a vehicle used for any commercial or production agriculture purpose. 

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique Expanded Use" may display YOM plates. The antique plates and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

Indiana

Historic

Available for vehicles registered as Historic or Collector. Historic vehicles must be at least $25 years old and are charged a standard registration fee, vehicle excise tax, and county and municipal vehicle excise tax, if applicable for a historic license plate. Collector Vehicles must be at least 25 years old; owned, operated, restored, maintained, or used as a collector’s item, a leisure pursuit, or an investment; and not used primarily for transportation. Collector vehicles are registered for a reduced fee.

YOM

Vehicles registered as “Collector” may display YOM plates for an additional fee with DMV approval.

Iowa

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique," "Replica" or "Street Rod" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. The antique, replica, or street rod plates and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times. 

Kansas

Antique

Available for vehicles at least 35 model years old or older, and not altered or modified from the original manufacturer’s model, except for safety components. Standard antique registration/license plate fee is a one-time $40 fee.

Special Interest

Available for vehicles which are more than 20 years of age and which have not been altered or modified from the original manufacturer's specifications except to assure normal running operation or to meet specific safety inspection requirements on original equipment, or both. Applicants must also own or lease and have registered one or more vehicles for which regular registration fees are paid. There is a one-time $20 fee to defray the cost of issuing the original collector’s Special Interest plate. The registration fee for Special Interest registration is $26 per year, plus property taxes.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1949 or before that has been altered or modified and may be referred to as a "street rod.” The main component of a street rod that must still be part of the original vehicle is the body, i.e. the body must be all original steel. This is commonly referred to as Detroit steel for American made vehicles of this era. There may be some body work to repair rust and dents, but it must still be repairs to the original steel body. Applicants must also own or lease and have registered one or more vehicles for which regular registration fees are paid. The same fees as for special interest plates apply.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.  An antique plate may be used on the front of a vehicle in conjunction with the YOM plate in the rear at the option of the owner.

Kentucky

Historic

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used primarily for exhibition in shows, parades, tours and other special uses, and not for general transportation.

Street Rod

Available for modernized private passenger vehicles manufactured before 1949, or designed/manufactured to resemble such vehicles.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Historic" may display YOM plates or reproduction YOM plates. The historic plate and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times. 

Louisiana

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old that have been restored to their original condition without modifications.

Military Vehicle

Military honor license plates are available for motorized and nonmotorized World War II or Korean War military vehicles, including motorcycles and trailers. Military honor license plates are available for other motorized and nonmotorized military vehicles, including motorcycles and trailers, which can be classified as vehicles of historic or special interest and which are owned by collectors.

Street Cruiser

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and have undergone some type of modernizing, including modernization of the engine, transmission, drive train, interior refinements, and any other modifications the builder desires, which must be driven to events under their own power and used as safe non-racing vehicles for total family enjoyment.

Street Rod

Available for any antique automobile or truck produced in 1948 or earlier, which is an automobile or truck that is recognized as a street rod by the National Street Rod Association, and which has undergone some type of modernizing, to include modernizing of engine, transmission, drivetrain, interior refinements, and any other modifications the builder desires, which vehicle is to be driven to events under its own power and to be used as a safe, nonracing vehicle for total family enjoyment.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Maine

Antique

Available for vehicles manufactured after 1915 and more than 25 years old; equipped with an engine manufactured either at the same time as the vehicle or to the specifications of the original engine; substantially maintained in original or restored condition, and used primarily for exhibitions, club activities, parades or events of public interest. An antique auto may not be used as the owner’s primary mode of transportation of passengers or goods and may not be a reconstructed vehicle or altered vehicle.

Custom

Available for vehicles manufactured after 1948 that are at least 25 years old, or manufactured to resemble such a vehicle, that have been altered or modified from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1916 that are equipped with an engine manufactured either at the same time as the vehicle or to the specifications of the original engine, and which are used primarily for exhibitions, club activities, parades and other events of public interest and not used as a primary mode of transportation. 

Street Rod

Available for a replica of or a modified antique auto manufactured prior to 1949.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates. The antique plates and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

Maryland

Historic

Available for vehicles that are at least 20 years old that have not been substantially altered, remodeled, or remanufactured from their original construction. Historic vehicles cannot be used for general daily transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old that have been substantially altered from the manufacturer's original design.  Street rods cannot be used for general daily transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate.

Special Vintage Reproduction Plate

Reproduction of Maryland's 1910 plate available to most vehicles, including historic vehicles and street rods.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Historic" or "Street Rod" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.  The street rod or historic plates must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

Massachusetts

Antique

Available for vehicles more than 25 years old that are maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1949 that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Michigan

Historical

Available for vehicles that are at least 26 years old, owned solely as collector items, and used only for events such as historical club activities, parades, and car shows.  Historical vehicles cannot be used for general transportation except during the month of August.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Historical" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. 

Minnesota

Classic

Classic plates may only be displayed on motor vehicles manufactured between and including the years 1925-1948, designated as a classic car, excluding any type of commercial or recreational vehicle. Only a single rear plate required.

Collector

Available for motor vehicles (except recreational) that are at least 20 model years old and manufactured after 1935. At the time of application, the owners must certify that they have one or more vehicles registered with regular Minnesota license plates. Must be owned and operated solely as a collector's item and cannot be used for general transportation purposes. Only a single rear plate required. 

Pioneer

Available for motor vehicles manufactured prior to 1936 that are owned and operated solely as a collector's item and cannot be used for general transportation purposes. Only a single rear plate required.

Street Rod

Available for motor vehicles manufactured prior to 1949 or built to resemble such a vehicle. Must be owned and operated solely as a collector's item and cannot be used for general transportation purposes. Only a single rear plate required. 

YOM

YOM plates may be displayed on any vehicle that qualifies for collector registration or a vehicle that is at least 20 years old registered in the passenger class, if they are part of a series no longer used or reserved for use.

Mississippi

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old.

Street Rod

Available for modified antique vehicles produced by an American manufacturer in 1948 or earlier that have undergone some type of modernizing, including modernization of the engine, transmission, drivetrain, interior refinements and any other modifications the builder desires.  Street rods are to be driven under their own power and used as safe, nonracing vehicles for family enjoyment.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" or "Street Rod" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Missouri

Custom

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and manufactured after 1948, or manufactured to resemble such vehicles, that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have an entire body constructed from non-original materials, and which may be used for occasional transportation, exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, and similar uses and not for general daily transportation.

Historic

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old, owned solely as collector items, and used for exhibition and educational purposes.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1949, and vehicles manufactured to resemble such vehicles, that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design, or have an entire body constructed from non-original materials, and which may be used for occasional transportation, exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, and similar uses and not for general daily transportation.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Historic" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Montana

Pioneer

Available for vehicles that were manufactured in 1933 or earlier and used solely as collector items and not for general transportation.  Also available for "Street Rods," which are defined as vehicles manufactured before 1949, or manufactured to resemble such vehicles, that have been altered from their original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

Vintage

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1934 or later that are at least 30 years old and used solely as collector items and not for general transportation. Also available for "Street Rods" and some "Custom Vehicles," with "Custom Vehicles" defined as vehicles manufactured after 1948 that are at least 25 years old, or manufactured to resemble such vehicles, that have been altered from their original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

YOM

Vehicles that are at least 30 years old and used solely as collector items and vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used for general transportation may display YOM plates with DMV approval. The owner of a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, or pole trailer manufactured in the year 1948, 1949, or 1950 may display a single original Montana license plate that is affixed to the rear of the vehicle.

* A vehicle registered as a custom vehicle or street rod may display a single rear plate.

* If a person is not able to comply with the requirement that a front license plate be displayed because of the body construction of the motor vehicle, the person may submit to the highway patrol an application for a waiver along with a $25 inspection fee. A certificate of waiver may be issued upon inspection of the vehicle by a highway patrol officer.

Nebraska

Former Military Vehicle

Available for a motor vehicle that was manufactured for use in any country's military forces and is maintained to accurately represent its military design and markings, regardless of the vehicle's size or weight, but is no longer used, or never was used, by a military force. Former military vehicle license plates shall display, in addition to the registration number, the designation former military vehicle.

Historical

Available for vehicles that are at least 30 years old and essentially unaltered from original manufacturer specifications.  Vehicles registered as historical cannot be used for general daily transportation and the applicant must own and have registered a regular passenger vehicle that can be used for general daily transportation.

Special Interest

Available for motor vehicles of any age that are being collected, preserved, restored, or maintained by the owner as a leisure pursuit and not used for general transportation. Only a single, rear license plate will be issued for special interest plates.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Historical" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Only a single rear plate required.


*One license plate shall be issued, upon request and compliance with this subdivision, for any passenger car which is not manufactured to be equipped with a bracket on the front of the vehicle to display a license plate.

Nevada

Classic Vehicle

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old that have not been customized.

Classic Rod

Available for vehicles that are at least 20 years old and manufactured after 1949.

 

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1915 or earlier.  Applications for horseless carriage plates must be approved by the Horseless Carriage Club of Nevada.

Old Timer

Available for vehicles that are more than 40 years old.

Retired Military Vehicle

Available for any vehicle or trailer, regardless of size, weight or year of manufacture, that was manufactured for use in the military forces of any country and is maintained to depict or represent military design or markings. The term includes, without limitation, armored vehicles, passenger cars, half-track vehicles, motorcycles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles, tracked vehicles, trailers, trucks and truck-tractors. It must not be used for general transportation but may be used for exhibitions, parades, charitable events, fundraisers or similar activities, must be safe to be operated on the highways of this State; and be at least 20 years old on the date on which the owner of the retired military vehicle applies for license plates.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1949 that have been customized.

YOM

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1961 and older with DMV approval.

New Hampshire

Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old and maintained for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles whose body and frame were manufactured before 1949, and replicas thereof, that have been modified for safe road use, and which have been certified by the New Hampshire State Police.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" and manufactured in 1975 or earlier may display YOM plates with DMV approval. The antique plates and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

New Jersey

Historic

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used only for exhibition and educational purposes.

Street Rod

Available for modified antique vehicles manufactured before 1949 that are registered in a New Jersey street rod club which is fully affiliated with the National Street Rod Association.

YOM

No law on YOM plates. Not allowed.

New Mexico

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles that are at least 35 years old, owned as collector's items, and used solely for exhibition and educational purposes.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured at least 30 years ago may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

New York

Historical

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old, used only as collector's items or exhibition pieces, and not for daily transportation. Some vehicles that are less than 25 years old with unique characteristics may qualify for historical registration.

YOM

Vehicles that are more than 25 years old may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Vehicles registered with YOM plates may not be used for daily transportation.

North Carolina

Historic

Available for vehicles that meet the requirements for "Antique Auto" or "Horseless Carriage" vehicles:

  • Antique Auto - Available for vehicles that are at least 30 years old.
  • Horseless Carriage – Available for vehicles manufactured in 1943 or earlier.

YOM

Vehicles that are more than 35 years old may display YOM plates with DMV approval as long as the current registration plate is kept within the vehicle at all times.

North Dakota

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 40 years old and not used in the routine functions of business or farming operations.

Collector

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old. A signed affidavit stating that the vehicle will be operated solely as a collector's item and not for general transportation must be submitted when registering.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Ohio

Collector

Available for vehicles that are reference in the National Automobile Dealers Association Classic, Collectible and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide, or comparable guides including the 4th Edition Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 or the New Complete Book of Collectible Cars 1930-1990. Vehicles not listed in these publications may be eligible if the applicant obtains documentation from the manufacturer that the vehicle was in limited production or is in demand as a collectible vehicle at the time of the application.

Historical

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, but not for general transportation.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Historical" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. The historical plates and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

Oklahoma

Antique/Classic – Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used primarily for historical or exhibition purposes.

YOM

Vehicles that are at least 21 years old may display YOM plates with DMV approval as long as the current registration plate is carried within the vehicle.

Oregon

Antique

Available for vehicles that are older than one-half the number of years between the current year and 1900 and maintained as collector's items.

Special Interest

Available for several types of vehicles:
•    The year model is at least 25 years old. 
•    It has been sanctioned by an established organization as a vehicle of special interest 
•    It was manufactured before 1949 or resembles a vehicle manufactured before 1949 and meets the definition of street rod in ORS 801.513. It is not a motorcycle or assembled vehicle. 
•    It is a high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) originally manufactured for military use
•    It is a racing activity vehicle 

YOM

Vehicles registered as “Special Interest” may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Pennsylvania

Antique

Available for a motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformance with manufacturer specifications.

Classic

Available for a motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured at least 15 years prior to the current year which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformity with manufacturer specifications and appearance.

Collectible

Available for a reconstructed or modified motor vehicle substantially modified from the manufacturer’s original specifications and appearances and maintained in a collectible condition as determined by PennDOT.

Historic Military Vehicle

Available for an antique or classic vehicle, including a trailer, that was manufactured for use in any country's military forces and is maintained to represent the vehicle's military design and markings accurately. Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses. Occasional transportation and similar uses is defined as no more than one day a week.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1948 or earlier with a gross weight of 9,000 pounds or less, and reproductions of such vehicles, that have been materially altered or modified by the removal, addition or substitution of essential parts.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured in 1906 to 1975 that are registered as "Antique" or "Classic" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Rhode Island

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used only for exhibitions, parades, and car club activities.

YOM

Vehicles more than 25 years old may issue or approve a single YOM plate to be attached to the rear of the vehicle.

South Carolina

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar events, but not for general transportation.

YOM

Vehicles that are at least 30 years old, driven like a regular vehicle, and do not have a gross weight of more than 11,000 lbs and an empty weight of more than 9,000 lbs are eligible to display YOM plates with DMV approval.

South Dakota

Historic

Available for vehicles that are more than 30 years old and not used for general transportation purposes.

special interest

Available for a vehicle that is collected, preserved, restored, or maintained by the owner as a leisure pursuit and is not used for general or commercial transportation. The special interest motor vehicle license plate may be placed on any automobile, pickup, truck, or van that qualifies as a special interest motor vehicle. 

YOM

Vehicles that are more than 30 years old and only driven on special occasions such as displays, parades and exhibitions are eligible to display YOM plates with DMV approval.

 

*For a vehicle to qualify to display only a rear plate it must be driven less than 7,500 miles a year, and only to be used for occasional transportation. You must provide the current odometer reading of the vehicle. 

Tennessee

Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old with non-modified engines and bodies. Vehicles may only be used for general transportation on Saturdays and Sundays.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Antique registration plate must be kept in the vehicle and readily accessible to be produced upon request of any law enforcement officer.

Texas

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old, a collector's item, and not used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest and is not used for regular transportation. Only a single rear plate is required. The license plate must include the words “Antique Auto,” “Antique Truck,” “Antique Motorcycle,” “Antique Bus,” or “Military Vehicle,” as appropriate.

Classic

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old. 

Custom

Available for vehicles with a model year after 1948 that are at least 25 years old, and replicas of such vehicles, that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles manufactured before 1949, and replicas of such vehicles, that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique," "Classic," "Custom" or "Street Rod" may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Utah

Vintage

Available for vehicles that are at least 30 years old and primarily collector's items. Vintage vehicles may be used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses but not for general daily transportation.

Custom

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and primarily collector's items. Vehicles registered as custom have a model year after 1948 or were manufactured to resemble a vehicle that is at least 25 years old and has been altered from the manufacturer's original design or has a body constructed of non-original materials. Custom vehicles may be used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses but not for general daily transportation.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured in 1973 or earlier may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Vermont

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used solely for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest.

Exhibition

Available for vehicles that are maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles whose body and frame were manufactured before 1949, and replicas of such vehicles, that have been modified for safe road use.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Exhibition" that were manufactured before 1968 may display YOM plates with DMV approval as long as the current registration plates are carried within the vehicle at all times.

Virginia

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old, not used for daily transportation. Antique motor vehicles may display single rear-mounted license plates if the original manufacturer's design of the antique motor vehicle allows for the use of only single license plates or if the license plate was originally issued in one of the following years and is displayed in accordance with the provisions of subsection B: 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1945, or 1946.

Military Surplus Vehicle

Available for a multi-purpose or tactical vehicle that was manufactured by, or under the direction of the United States Armed Forces, for off-road use and subsequently authorized for sale to civilians. Specifically, this includes High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) also known as Humvees. This DOES NOT include the street legal Hummer, H2, or H3. Virginia DMV requires evidence that the applicant owns or has regular use of a passenger car, motorcycle or autocycle. Military surplus license plates will not be issued without this evidence.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured in or before 1972 are eligible to display vintage YOM plates with DMV approval. Vehicles displaying YOM plates can be registered as Antique and not used for general transportation, or may be used in an unrestricted manner if registered through the same procedure as standard vehicle registration.

Washington

Collector

Available for vehicles that are more than 30 years old, owned and operated as collector vehicles, and not used for general transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate. 

Horseless Carriage

Available for vehicles that are more than 40 years old, owned and operated as collector vehicles, and not used for general transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Collector" or "Horseless Carriage" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Can display a set of plates on the front and rear of the vehicle or just on the rear.

 

* The Washington state patrol may grant exceptions to the front plate requirement if the body construction of the vehicle makes compliance with it impossible.

Washington D.C.

Historic

Available for vehicles registered as Historic. There are two types: F(I) Historic Vehicles- any motor vehicle whose manufacturer's model year is at least 25 years old or any motor vehicle which is at least 15 years old and is a make of motor vehicle no longer manufactured; not exceeding a total mileage  of 1,000 miles annually and F(II) Historic Vehicles - any motor vehicle whose manufacturer's model year is at least 25 years old or any motor which is at least 15 years old and is a make of motor vehicle no longer manufactured, and is used on the public highways for the transportation of passengers or property in conjunction with exhibitions, expositions, parades, tours, club activities, or similar activities or events, including transportation directly to or from such activities or events, but in no event used for general transportation. 

YOM

Vintage license tags shall be permitted on historic motor vehicles in place of historic motor vehicle license tags if approved by the Director. A person who seeks to display vintage license tags shall submit an application to the Director by letter, or at the discretion of the Director, by email or through the Department's website. The application shall include the applicant's name, address, vehicle information number (“VIN”), make, model, year of manufacture, and a color photograph of the vintage tag. The Director may request the applicant to appear in person with the vintage tag for the purposes of inspection. 

West Virginia

Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old and owned solely as collector's items.

Classic Car

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old, registered annually as everyday vehicles, and used for general transportation.

YOM

Vehicles manufactured more than 25 years ago may display YOM plates with DMV approval.

Wisconsin

Antique

Available for vehicles manufactured in 1945 or earlier that have not been altered or modified from original manufacturer specifications, and which cannot be used for general transportation.

Collector

Available for vehicles that are at least 20 years old, being preserved because of their historical interest, and have no body alterations. The owner of a collector vehicle must own or lease at least one other vehicle registered in Wisconsin as a regular passenger vehicle to be used for general transportation. 

Collector Special

The owners of one or more vehicles registered with collector plates can obtain Collector Special (CLS) license plates for their other vehicles that are used for general transportation.

Historic Military

Available for vehicles manufactured for use in any country’s military forces and maintained to accurately represent their military design and markings with no alterations. Does not include tracked vehicles. Historic military vehicles manufactured for the U.S. may be of any age, imported historic military vehicles must be at least 25 years old. Historic Military vehicle registration allows for operation to and from special occasions, such as parades, display events, club activities, exhibitions and tours.

Hobbyist

Available for vehicles that meet the requirements for "Street Modified," "Replica," "Reconstructed," or "Homemade" vehicles:

Street Modified

  • At least 20 years old.
  • May have body modifications.
  • May still resemble the original year and make of the vehicle.
  • Are more commonly known as "hot rods" or "street rods."

Replica

  • Are reproductions of vehicles originally made by another manufacturer.
  • Must replicate a vehicle model that is at least 20 years old.

Reconstructed

  • Must be constructed from a vehicle that is at least 20 years old.
  • Must no longer resemble the original vehicle.
  • Application materials must include a bill of sale for all major parts used in the construction of the vehicle.
  • If the vehicle qualifies, it must pass a safety and equipment inspection with the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Homemade

  • The vehicle must have been constructed from new or used parts with a body and frame not originating from or resembling a previously manufactured motor vehicle.
  • May need an inspection by a Wisconsin State Patrol inspector. You will receive a letter requesting an inspection, if needed.

YOM

Collector vehicles manufactured before 1979 and vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates under use limitations with DMV approval.  The department-issued plates and registration must be carried within the vehicle at all times.

Wyoming

Custom

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948, or manufactured to resemble such vehicles, that have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials. Vehicle owner has to have resided in Wyoming for at least 1 year and the vehicle may not be used for general transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate.

Pioneer

Available for individuals who have resided in Wyoming for at least 1 year and own a vehicle that is at least 25 years old and not used for general transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles from 1948 and earlier, or manufactured to resemble such vehicles, which have been altered from the manufacturer's original design or have a body constructed from non-original materials. Vehicle owner has to have resided in Wyoming for at least 1 year and the vehicle may not be used for general transportation. Only required to display a single rear plate.

YOM

No law on YOM plates. Not allowed.

 

* Any motor vehicle which was originally manufactured without a bracket, device or other means to display and secure a front license plate may display only a single rear plate.
