You may use the following points in your message:

  • S.B. 330 allows for the registration and road use of newer four-wheeled “military surplus vehicles”, defined as vehicles less than 35 years old that were manufactured for use by the U.S. military forces and subsequently authorized for sale to civilians.
  • S.B. 330 allows military surplus vehicles to be issued special interest license plates displaying a decal that identifies them as military surplus vehicles.
  • S.B. 330 requires an inspection of military surplus vehicles by highway patrol prior to registration, in line with current policy for all assembled, reconstructed and restored vehicles.
  • S.B. 330 recognizes the important historical and patriotic purpose of these vehicles.
  • S.B. 330 acknowledges that military surplus vehicles are becoming valued collectors’ items among the automotive community.

Overview: SAN-supported legislation (S.B. 330) has been introduced in Kansas to allow for the registration and on-road use of four-wheeled surplus military vehicles. Currently, only antique military vehicles more than 35 years old can be registered for road use. A similar bill (H.B. 2420) allowing for the registration of newer military surplus vehicles, excluding fully-tracked vehicles, was introduced in the House earlier this year. S.B. 330 awaits consideration in the Senate Committee on Transportation.
