New Jersey Introduces Bill to Expand Historic Vehicle Usage

  • A.B. 3256 would ease the usage restrictions on historic vehicles by allowing them to be used for occasional travel one day a week in addition to exhibition and educational purposes.
  • A.B. 3256 creates a more reasonable standard for antique collectors and expands opportunities for owners to be able to enjoy recreational driving of these prized vehicles.
  • A.B. 3256 provides added incentive to owners of qualifying historic vehicles (more than 25-years old) to register as “historic.”
  • A.B. 3256 recognizes that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States.

Overview: SAN-supported legislation (A.B. 3256) has been introduced in New Jersey to allow historic vehicles to be used for pleasure driving one day a week. Currently, vehicles registered as historic must be at least 25 years old and can be driven solely for exhibition and educational purposes. The bill currently awaits consideration in the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee.
