New York Bill to Exempt Historic Vehicles from Extra Registration Fee Introduced

  • S. 7044 exempts historic motor vehicles from a $25 per year supplemental Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District registration fee.  
  • S. 7044 recognizes the fact that historic vehicles constitute a small portion of the vehicle fleet and are infrequently operated.
  • In New York historic vehicles must be more than 25 years old and only used as collector’s items or exhibition vehicles, not for daily transportation. 

Overview: Legislation (S. 7044) has been introduced to exempt historic vehicle owners in several cities in New York from paying the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District supplemental registration fee. The city of New York and the counties of Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester are included in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. The bill awaits consideration in the Senate Transportation Committee.
