South Carolina Introduces Bill to Recognize Automotive Hobby as State’s Official Pastime

  • H. 3680 recognizes that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars and trucks is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of South Carolina. Many residents in this state maintain classic automobiles as a pastime and do so with great passion and as a means of individual expression. 
  • H. 3680 acknowledges that it is important to recognize the effect that the more than 100-year history of the automobile has had on the economic progress of the United States and to support wholeheartedly all activities involved in the restoration and exhibition of classic automobiles.  
  • H. 3680 promotes the collection, restoration and preservation of automobiles as an activity shared across generations and across all segments of society. Hundreds of local car clubs and related businesses have been instrumental in preserving a historic part of the heritage of South Carolina by encouraging the restoration and exhibition of such vintage works of art.
  • H. 3680 embraces the spirit of the annual national celebration of Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD), officially recognized by the U.S. Congress as well as other domestic and foreign jurisdictions.

Overview: SAN-supported legislation (H. 3680) has been introduced in South Carolina to designate the automotive hobby as the official family-friendly pastime of the state, specifically the “restoration, exhibition, showing, and enjoyment of classic and antique motor vehicles.” The bill currently awaits consideration in the House Committee on Education and Public Works.
