Emissions

Vehicles registered in Lake County and Porter County are required to undergo emissions testing biennially.

Diesel Vehicles:
Diesel vehicles are not tested for emissions.

Exemptions:
1. New vehicles for the newest four (4) model years
2. Pre-1976 model year vehicles
3. Kit cars and dune buggies that meet established criteria for a "Specialty Exemption"; specialty exemptions must be applied for and granted every two years
4. Show cars that meet established criteria for a "Show Car Exemption"; show car exemptions must be applied for and granted every two years
5. Ceremonial vehicles
6.  Antique vehicles
7. Vehicles with a GVWR of more than 9,000 lbs.
8. Electric Vehicles

Exhaust Noise

Indiana Code

9-19-8-2.  Muffler to be free from visually discernible conditions.

A motor vehicle must be equipped with a muffler free from the following visually discernible conditions:
(1) Exhaust gas leaks.
(2) Alteration of muffler elements.
(3) Deterioration of muffler elements.

9-19-8-3.  Muffler or other noise dissipative device to meet certain conditions.

A motor vehicle must be equipped with a muffler or other noise dissipative device that meets the following conditions:
(1) Is in good working order.
(2) Is in constant operation to prevent excessive noise.

9-19-8-4.  Equipment prohibited.

A motor vehicle may not be equipped with any of the following:
(1) A muffler cutout.
(2) A bypass.
(3) Any similar device.

License Plate

Historic

Available for vehicles registered as Historic or Collector. Historic vehicles must be at least $25 years old and are charged a standard registration fee, vehicle excise tax, and county and municipal vehicle excise tax, if applicable for a historic license plate. Collector Vehicles must be at least 25 years old; owned, operated, restored, maintained, or used as a collector’s item, a leisure pursuit, or an investment; and not used primarily for transportation. Collector vehicles are registered for a reduced fee.

Vehicles registered as “Collector” may display YOM plates for an additional fee with DMV approval.
