Emissions

On-board diagnostic systems (OBD) on light-duty vehicles that are 16 model years or newer, having a GVWR of 8,500 lbs or less are checked as part of Vermont's annual vehicle safety inspection.

Diesel Vehicles:
Diesel vehicles with a GVWR of 8,500 lbs or less with a model year of 1997 or newer are required to undergo emissions testing.

Exemptions:
1. Vehicles older than 16 model years 
2. Vehicles with a GVWR of more than 8,500 lbs

§ 1221. Condition of vehicle

A motor vehicle, operated on any highway, shall be in good mechanical condition and shall be properly equipped.

License Plate

Antique

Available for vehicles that are at least 25 years old and used solely for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest.

Exhibition

Available for vehicles that are maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest.

Street Rod

Available for vehicles whose body and frame were manufactured before 1949, and replicas of such vehicles, that have been modified for safe road use.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Exhibition" that were manufactured before 1968 may display YOM plates with DMV approval as long as the current registration plates are carried within the vehicle at all times.
